Treatment Received

  • The carpets were surface cleaned using variable control museum vacuums.
  • The tape formerly securing the carpets together was mechanically removed and adhesive residue removed using a solvent.
  • All dyes were tested for colour fastness and all proved stable.
  • Spray extraction was used to clean the carpets further using a conservation grade detergent in de-ionised water.
  • Areas of loss were infilled using mesh canvas and re-knotted using colour matched wool.
  • The edges were secured using wool with laid thread couching through a scoured linen support.
  • Velcro strips were machine stitched to heavy duty black cotton tape for securing the carpets together.
  • Polyester needle felt underlay was positioned under the two carpets.
