Treatment Received

  • The Velcro hanging mechanism was removed. The label and lining were removed for separate conservation.
  • Linen support strips were documented and removed from the reverse of the tapestry.
  • All parts were cleaned using a variable powered museum suction cleaner.
  • Areas of yellow discolouration were treated with a combination of dilute conservation grade detergent and agarose gel.
  • The matted wool fibres and horsehair were gently teased out to reduce matting.
  • Areas of broken warps were re-warped using new linen threads of similar weight and colour.
  • New and original linen support strips were positioned and secured with conservation stitches.
  • The label was conserved, placed in an archival polyester film sleeve and reattached.
  • A new custom sized double loop Velcro hanging mechanism was made.
